MotoGP Championship Standings Explained: How Points Work
Championship standings answer a different question than Sunday’s results. Results tell you who finished where today. Standings tell you who is winning the season.
Answer first
Follow free rider and team championship tables on MotoSector Stats. After each points-paying session, compare the classification on Results with the updated standings board.
Sprint vs Grand Prix points (fan view)
- Sprint (Saturday): shorter race, smaller points scale, still championship-relevant
- Grand Prix (Sunday): full points scale, main title driver
- Both feed the same riders’ championship table
Writers should not treat a Sprint win as equivalent to a GP win when projecting titles — but ignoring Sprint points underestimates modern title maths.
How to read a standings table
- Position / points
- Gap to the leader
- Wins / podiums context (when shown)
- Constructor / team tables separately from riders

A year ago, Ai Ogura was a MotoGP rookie best known for arriving with a reputation — reigning Moto2 world champion, tipped as one to watch, but unproven at the top level. Today, he sits second in the 2026 MotoGP championship, just 14 points off the lead, with the most consistent scoring record of any of the five riders still in title contention. That's one of the fastest credibility jumps the sport has seen in years, and it's worth understanding exactly how he got here.
