MotoGP Championship Standings Explained: How Points Work

MotoGP Championship Standings Explained: How Points Work

Championship standings answer a different question than Sunday’s results. Results tell you who finished where today. Standings tell you who is winning the season.

Answer first

Follow free rider and team championship tables on MotoSector Stats. After each points-paying session, compare the classification on Results with the updated standings board.

Sprint vs Grand Prix points (fan view)

  • Sprint (Saturday): shorter race, smaller points scale, still championship-relevant
  • Grand Prix (Sunday): full points scale, main title driver
  • Both feed the same riders’ championship table

Writers should not treat a Sprint win as equivalent to a GP win when projecting titles — but ignoring Sprint points underestimates modern title maths.

How to read a standings table

  1. Position / points
  2. Gap to the leader
  3. Wins / podiums context (when shown)
  4. Constructor / team tables separately from riders
